Teams Collecting Birdies for Wishes
April 11, 2002
Men's and women's golf teams in the American Southwest Conference have combined for 565 points in the coaches association's Birdies for Wishes program through April 4. McMurry University (99) and Texas Lutheran University (98) lead the conference men while Mary Hardin-Baylor (35) and McMurry (28) are the women's leaders.
Sponsored jointly by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA), Birdies for Wishes is a program that enables coaches, student-athletes and fans of college golf to contribute to the Make-A-Wish Foundation while supporting the collegiate program of their choice.
Participating individuals and corporations pledge an amount to be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for each birdie made by their designated golf team throughout the 2001-02 season. Proceeds from the fund-raising effort benefit the school's local Make-A-Wish Foundation chapter in the college's name. The men's and women's golf coaches associations hope to raise over $1 million to aid the Make-A-Wish Foundation in their quest to make better the life of children affected by serious illness.
Golfstat tracks the number of birdies made for every participating program throughout the season, while Golfweek is periodically listing the top contributing programs across the country. Complete coverage of Birdies for Wishes can be found in Golfweek magazine or at www.golfweek.com and www.golfstat.com. For information about how to contribute to Birdies for Wishes, contact the GCAA at (405) 329-4222 or the NGCA at (312) 551-0814.
