Women Run to National Runner-up Finish

June 5---McMurry University women's track and field finished as runner-up at the 2002 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships (May 23-25), collecting a pair of national event titles and 11 All-America citations in the process. McMurry scored 49 points, trailing national champion Wheaton College (Mass.) who totaled 67 points.
The Lady Indians' finish is the best-ever American Southwest Conference showing in the national outdoor track and field meet, and is the second national runner-up team placing and third NCAA Top Eight finish for the Conference in 2001-02. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's golf team placed second in its 2002 NCAA-III national championships in early May and the Concordia University at Austin baseball team finished seventh at the NCAA-III College World Series over Memorial Day weekend.
McMurry junior Darcell Edwards successfully defended her triple jump title, winning the 2002 championship with a career-tying and 2002 season-best leap of 41-3 in the finals. Edwards won the 2001 outdoor triple jump title with the same 41-3 jump. Edwards completed her national championship trip placing second in the long jump with a 19-2 effort and her second All-America award.
The McMurry relay team of Crystal Early, Kelly Brown, Talila Harlmon and Talitha Belcher won the 4x100-meter relay title with a 46.87 clocking. The All-American foursome advanced to the finals by winning their heat in 46.57.
Belcher and Brown each added two more All-America citations to their 2002 collections. Belcher placed second in the 100-m dash (11.75) and fourth in the 200-m dash (24.08). Brown finished fourth in the 400-m dash (56.15) and seventh in the 200 (24.62).
Cheyenne Oldham posted an eight-place finish in the pole vault, jumping 11-6 1/2 for All-America honors.
McMurry thrower Cade Melton won All-America honors in the javelin throw, finishing eighth with a toss of 194-9 and earning a point for the Indians in the NCAA-III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
