East Texas Baptist University, the defending ASC softball tournament champion, capitalized on last season's NCAA Division III postseason success and open the 2003 season ranked No. 11 in the USA Today/NFCA Division III preseason coaches poll.

ETBU finished the 2002 season with a 38-8 record and ranked 12th in the final USA Today/NFCA poll after advancing to the NCAA-III West Regional championship game. The Lady Tigers ended last season with a tournament loss at Pacific Lutheran University who is ranked fifth in the 2003 preseason listing.

East Texas Baptist opens its 2003 season traveling to NCAA-Division II Ouachita Baptist University on Tuesday (Feb. 18). The Lady Tigers have been picked by the ASC coaches and media to repeat as East Division champions. ETBU junior outfielder Tonya Minor (Bullard, Texas) was named East Division Preseason Player of the Year after earning NFCA All-America, NFCA All-West Region and All-Conference honors a year ago.

The preseason ranking was released by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on February 12 and remains in effect until the NFCA releases its first regular-season ranking on April 2.
