CLINTON,MS An eighth inning explosion of eight runs helped the Choctaws (32-13) complete a doubleheader sweep of UT-Dallas (26-17) 15-4 to claim the 2003 American Southwest Conference Tournament Championship and earn a trip to a post season regional.
After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning, the Choctaws battled back with three runs in the third and fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead. UT-Dallas pulled within 6-4 with a run in the fifth before the Choctaws scored one in the seventh and eight in the eighth inning. The big hits in the inning were back to back homeruns by Kent Chamblee and Trey Rein. Chamblees was a three run shot.
MC junior closer Dereck Tillman entered the game with two outs in the first inning and threw 5 1/3 strong innings allowing just one run on two hits to give the Choctaws bats time to heat up. Tillman relieved starter Cooper Campbell who walked the bases loaded and was charged with three unearned runs in the inning.
Senior Bo Edmiston pitched the final three innings on just one day of rest to earn his first save of the season after throwing eight innings Thursday. The losing pitcher for UT-Dallas was Troy Kiesling.
Junior pitcher John Jay and senior shortstop Turk Stovall were named Co-Tournament MVPs. Jay set up the championship game with a two hit shutout in the first game Saturday and Stovall batted .385 with a homerun and four runs batted in before leaving the early game Saturday from dehydration.
The Choctaws will find out what regional they will play in on Thursday, May 11. The NCAA regional play will start May 15.
Jay Keeps Choctaw Hopes Alive With Two Hit Gem
CLINTON,MS Mississippi College right-hander John Jay pitched the game of the season for the Choctaws with a two hit shutout over the Comets of UT-Dallas to lead the Choctaws to a 1-0 win and force a Championship game against the Comets.
Jay entered the game with 14 innings of work this season but went the full nine innings striking out seven batters and walking just one. He improved his record to 2-0.
Marc Chisholm provided the offense for the Choctaws with four hits in four at bats including the game winning RBI in the top of the ninth inning. Chisholm singled in Kent Chamblee who started the ninth inning off by diving head first into first base for a single.
UT-Dallas pitcher Gordon Walters also was not scored upon lasting seven innings allowing six hits and striking out six. Randy Black took the loss pitching two innings allowing the one run on two hits. The loss drops him to 3-3.
