ASC Softball Players Earn NFCA All-West Region Honors
May 13, 2003
Eight softball players from the American Southwest Conference have been named to Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association West Region teams.
Junior catcher Angela Gonzales of conference champion East Texas Baptist University and freshman designated player Tiffany Wolfe of Howard Payne University were both voted to the West Region First Team. The pair advance to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America team ballot.
Gonzales, a two-time first team award winner, was selected to the NCAA-III All-America Third Team a year ago. She was earlier named the 2003 ASC East Division Player of the Year and earned both all-conference and All-East Division citations. Wolfe, the ASC West Division Freshman of the Year, earned second team All-West Division honors.
Three ASC players earned places on the NFCA West Region Second Team. UT Dallas junior Candace Felts was selected at first base. Howard Payne sophomore Dayberly Hopper was voted to an outfield position and sophomore Kassie Kilburn was an at-large pick. Felts and Kilburn were each All-Conference and All-Division First Team selections this season while Hopper was named to the West Division honorable mention list.
West Region Third Team citations went to Shaunna Lawrence and Stephanie Herrera of UT Dallas, and Alissa Cordes of Howard Payne. Lawrence was an all-conference and All-East First Team pick in the outfield. Herrerra and Cordes were each named the second teams in their respective divisions.
The Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Region teams were selected by vote of NFCA member coaches within each of the eight regions. The complete list of region teams can be accessed at www.nfca.org.
