Athletes Set for NCAA-III Outdoor Track Championships
May 21, 2003
Eight American Southwest Conference student-athletes will compete in this weekend's NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Merrick-Pinkard Track Complex in Canton, N.Y. (May 22-24).
McMurry University, conference men's and women's track and field champions, sends the largest ASC contingent to the national meet with one woman and four men all competing in field events. Two national champions top the Indians' list of qualifiers: junior Darcell Edwards and sophomore Cody Brotherton. Edwards will defend her NCAA outdoor triple jump crown, entering the meet with the nation's second-best leap in the event. Edwards will also compete in long jump, an event she finished as national runner-up a year ago and that she has the nation's top qualifying performance this season. Brotherton looks to add to his 2003 national shot put title collection, winning the NCAA-III Indoor shot put championship in mid-March (57-2).
McMurry's national-bound team also includes junior Jerrod Cook in the hammer throw, freshman Ryder Peacock in high jump, and freshman Ty Gerner in pole vault.
Other ASC student-athletes qualifying for the NCAA-III Outdoor Track and Field Championships include Sul Ross State University freshman Phillip Givens who earned a spot in two events, the 100-meter dash and long jump. Sophomore Quinton Boldon of Howard Payne University is scheduled to compete in the 200-meter dash while Texas Lutheran University freshman Amber Arrambide will participate in the high jump.
