East Texas Baptist had its bats sizzling from the onset in Saturday’s doubleheader (Feb. 21), finishing game one vs. Trinity with 14 hits. Six of the Lady Tigers’ hits were doubles with four of those coming in a row in the fourth inning. ETBU swept the twinbill (9-0, 3-1). . . . Mandi McConnell allowed one unearned run in the first inning of game two then overpowered Trinity with a two-hitter the rest of the way in a 3-1 win. McConnell struck-out seven and allowed three walks. She combined with pitchers Carrie Mills and Amy Lockhart to hold Trinity to no earned runs in the sweep of the regional rival.

Howard Payne sophomore P Jessica Wright struck-out seven batters over 15.2 innings of work in three appearances in the Lady Jackets’ opening weekend. Wright recorded the 7-1 win vs. Northwood (Feb. 20), giving-up a pair of hits and no earned runs. She sat down four in Saturday’s game one loss to Texas Wesleyan.

OF Kayla Hemperly drilled a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh to give Louisiana College a 1-0 win over NCAA Div. I Southern University on Saturday (Feb. 21). The sophomore drove-in a pair of runs and stole a base in the 4-0 nightcap victory. . . . The Lady Wildcats opened the 2004 season with four wins vs. Southern to stretch its win streak to 12 games dating to the end of the 2003 season. . . . Emillie Collins collected eight strikeouts and allowed four hits in a 3-1 complete game win vs. SU (Feb. 18), then tossed a shutout with nine strikeouts against SU on Saturday (Feb. 21).

First-year LeTourneau coach Jay Terry got solid offensive play from sophomore CF Sarah Ricks last weekend. Ricks hit .583 (7-for-12) over the four games with two doubles and her career-first home run, nailing the four-bagger in against Texas Wesleyan in the February 18 opener. Ricks is just the third player in LU history to record a home run. . . . Senior Stephanie Ray also homered over the weekend, tagging her home run against Trinity on Friday (Feb. 20). . . . LeTourneau led Trinity 4-2 heading into the top of the seventh, but lost 10-4 when TU plated eight runs in its half of the inning.

Mary Hardin-Baylor opened the season with a sweep of UT Dallas (Feb. 20) and then salvaged a split with NAIA power Houston Baptist (Feb. 21). Megan Brown pitched 12.1 innings over three appearances last week with a win against UTD and a save against Houston Baptist. She allowed just seven hits and struck out seven. . . . UMHB had five players make their Crusader debuts over the weekend. . . . Danielle Thomas scored runs in all three of the Crusaders’ wins last week, including the game-winner in the 1-0 win over Houston Baptist. She had a triple and two doubles among her four hits and was successful on all three of her stolen base attempts. Thomas also played outstanding defense at shortstop, posting eight putouts and 16 assists against just one error.

UT Dallas opened its season dropping Friday’s doubleheader at Mary Hardin-Baylor (Feb. 20). Sarah Arldt went 3-for-4 over the doubleheader and scored two of the Comets’ three runs. . . . Freshman P Daci DeLeon made her collegiate debut against UMHB. DeLeon threw 4.1 innings in the 3-1 loss, sitting down nine batters via strikeouts and walking just three.

Texas Lutheran will spend the weekend in North Dallas for games against University of Dallas and UT Dallas. . . . The Bulldogs (3-1) have not played since sweeping a doubleheader from Gustavus Adolphus on Feb. 14.
