AROUND THE CONFERENCE
Mississippi College senior Thomas Blaylock won a key match against #8 Sewanee (Mar. 7) by coming from behind to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles position. . . . The Choctaws ranked ninth in the latest regional rankings. . . . Mississippi College senior Katherine Fountain put together a solid week against tough competition. Against #20 Sewanee, Fountain played a tough match in No. 1 singles spot losing 7-5 and 6-3. She also dropped a doubles point teamed up with Ashley Diaz. She rebounded with two blowout wins against McMurry in the No. 1 singles and doubles positions to improve to 4-1 in singles and doubles.
Mary Hardin-Baylor men opened ASC West play with a 7-0 win over Sul Ross State (Mar. 6). The UMHB men dropped the No. 1 doubles match, but lost just one other set on the way to the win. . . . The Crusaders will finally play their first home match of the spring when Howard Payne comes to the UMHB Tennis Center for a division dual match on Friday. Last fall, the UMHB men fell to the Yellow Jackets while the women won 6-3 vs. HPU in the first match played on the new courts at the UMHB Tennis Complex. . . . Lindsey Hoffman won both singles and doubles matches in the ASC West opener at Sul Ross State (Mar. 6). The senior posted a straight set victory over Heather Hightower at No. 1 singles and teamed with Emily Sievers for a dominating 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Hoffman is 4-1 this spring. . . . UMHB did not lose a set in the 9-0 womens win vs. SRSU. . . . Megan Nalley followed up her ASC Individual Tournament flight three singles championship with a 6-0, 6-0 win over SRSUs Isabel Carrillo and she also teamed with Candace Cohagan for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.
Matt Smith led Schreiner to its first ASC West victory over Sul Ross State last Friday (Mar. 5). Smith and partner Jay Govan opened with an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles and followed that with an impressive 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles. . . . Winds were swirling at 20-30 miles per hour in Alpine last weekend, making for a challenging day for both teams. . . . Four Mountaineer women posted their first singles wins of the dual match season against SRSU: Nicki Palmer, Patty Santiago, Kristen Morton and Priscilla Perez.
UT Dallas men opened the dual season 3-0, taking wins last Saturday (Mar. 6) against ASC East rival LeTourneau (7-0) and McMurry (5-2). . . . No. 2 singles Kosta Dombrovskey (3-0) and No. 6 singles Shane Rutherford (3-0) have not lost a match all season. Dombrovsky is teaming with Kevin Durten in doubles for a 3-0 season mark. . . . . No. 1 womens singles Andrea Hidalgo played two dual matches on Saturday (Mar. 6), sweeping through the competition in both singles and doubles. The senior lost only one set in both of her singles matches, and won 8-0 and 8-3 in doubles, playing with a brand new partner, Leslie Chen, in the second match against McMurry. Hidalgo is 4-0 in singles action.
The Louisiana College women opened the month of March and its dual match schedule splitting four weekend matches in the state of Arkansas. . . . Kristin VanHook (2-0) and Courtney Joiner (3-0) head into Saturdays match at conference newcomer UT Tyler undefeated in singles play.
Freshman Jeff Wanek produced two victories for Texas Lutheran in its conference victory over Howard Payne last Saturday (Mar. 6). Wanek won his No. 3 singles (6-3, 7-6) and teamed with Rodney Munoz to win the No. 1 doubles match (8-5). . . . The Texas Lutheran men's tennis team defeated Howard Payne for the first time in the Bulldogs brief history in the ASC in a 4-3 dual match win Saturday. TLU won two of the three doubles matches to earn the one point for doubles play and won three of the six singles matches to claim the narrow victory. . . . Dustin Wyatt and John McCullagh each carry 3-1 overall singles records. . . . Angela Bryant evened her season singles record at 2-2 with a straight set victory against HPU No. 1 Marie Williams (6-4, 6-2). Bryant joined with Jenny Growcock to down Williams and Leslie Patterson 9-8 (7-5).
Ozarks senior and No. 5 singles Holly Rexroat posted a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 10-8 win over NCAA Division II Arkansas Tech (Mar. 2), using a super tiebreaker to close out the victory--her first dual match win. . . . UO women opened ASC East play with an 8-1 win vs. Louisiana College on Friday (Mar. 5).
Freshman Casey Morgan helped Howard Payne to a 5-4 ASC West win vs. Texas Lutheran (Mar. 6), winning both her singles and doubles matches. Morgan, playing at No. 2, upended TLUs Jenny Growcock 6-4, 6-3 before winning 8-0 in doubles.
Weather and spring break combined to force a long break in the LeTourneau schedule. After rain caused postponement of Thursdays ASC East-opener vs. Austin College (Mar. 4), LU began division play dropping both mens and womens matches at UT Dallas on Saturday (Mar. 6). The womens team is not scheduled to play until March 26 with the men resuming action on March 27.
