AROUND THE CONFERENCE
The American Southwest Conference golf teams open the last month of the 2004 regular season facing busy schedules and tough in-region competition. The majority of the ASC mens teams are off until the April 5-6 West Region Invitational in Round Rock, Texas. Only UT Tyler and Ozarks have competitions scheduled. The majority of the ASC womens teams, off last week, resume play on Monday and Tuesday (Mar. 29-30) at the Southwestern Teravista Invitational in Round Rock, Texas. McMurry travels to the Grand Canyon Tournament in Phoenix.
The March 23 Golfstat womens rankings list Mary Hardin-Baylor No. 2 in the Division III womens standings. UMHB, who carries an 80.67 adjusted scoring average, is 6-0 vs. Top 25 teams. Hardin-Simmons lists No. 18. . . . The four Hardin-Simmons freshmen are making the greatest impact on team performance in NCAA Division III in the Golfstat report released March 25. The four average 86.19 with a 553.630 relative strength rating.
The Mary Hardin-Baylor men are No. 8 in the March 23 Golfstat Division III rankings with a 74.53 adjusted scoring average and a 3-1 record vs. the Top 25. Hardin-Simmons (No. 18), Texas Lutheran (No. 25), McMurry (No. 27) and LeTourneau (No. 28) are ranked among the nations Top 30 mens squads. . . . LeTourneau and UT Tyler list one-two in the Golfstat Freshman Class Impact Ranking released March 25. LU has four freshman among its top 5, averaging 77.26 with a 669.574 relative strength rating. UT Tyler plays three freshmen in its top 5 with the trio averaging 76.92 and a 489.147 relative strength rating.
ASC teams are ranked in both Division III golf coaches polls released this week. The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA)/Precept Coaches poll lists Mary Hardin-Baylor (No. 15), Hardin-Simmons (No. 17), UT Dallas (No. 22) and Texas Lutheran (No. 23) among the Top 25 mens teams. Both McMurry and LeTourneau are among teams receiving votes. The National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) womens poll ranks Mary Hardin-Baylor third and Hardin-Simmons 10th.
Senior Gabe Vogt was the most consistent Texas Lutheran golfer in the Bulldogs two coast-to-coast tournaments last week. Vogt carded a three-round 226 (74-77-75) to place in a tie at 16th at the Golden Isles Collegiate Invitational in Georgia (Mar. 19-21). After a flight to southern California, Vogt posted scores of 83-77-76--236 to place in a 19th-place tie at the CLU Kingsmen Invitational on Monday and Tuesday (Mar. 22-23). . . . The TLU women resume play with the Southwestern Teravista Invitational on Monday and Tuesday (Mar. 29-30). Theresa Ashorn carries a team-low 82.5-stoke average.
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior Todd Anderson shot an 80-74-76--230 and finished one-stroke off the medalist to tie with five others for second-place at the competitive CLU Kingsmen Invitational (Mar. 22-23). Anderson posted the best finish among ASC golfers. He carries a team-low 75.4-stroke average. . . . The UMHB women will play in the Southwestern Teravista Invitational next week.
LeTourneau used Mondays University of Dallas Invitational (Mar. 22) to get players time on the course as its B squad, led by freshman Doug Moorehead who carded rounds of 80-81 for a 161 and third-place individual finish. . . . The YellowJackets are off until the West Region Invitational April 5-6.
The McMurry men played to a fifth-place finish at the CLU Kingsmen Invitational, led by the eight-place performance of sophomore Daniel Heuston. Heuston shot 76-79-77 for a 232, just three strokes behind the medalist. The top 10 finish was Heustons second consecutive. . . . After an off-week, the McMurry womens team returns to action March 29-30 to play in the Division II-laden Grand Canyon Invitational at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz. The Lady Indians turn right around on April 2-4 to compete in the Texas-Brownsville tournament in Austin. . . . Brittany Cary is on a two-tournament win streak after posting her first two collegiate victories at the UMHB Lady Crusader Invitational and TLU Lady Bulldog Classic.
