Advances to ASC Softball Championship; TLU and UTD to Battle in

IRVING, Texas ----- No. 1-ranked and ASC East Division champion East Texas Baptist University won both of its opening day games to advance to the championship contest in the 2004 American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament on Saturday (May 1).
ETBU (39-3) opened defense of its ASC title with a 2-0 shutout of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the opening round. The Lady Tigers advanced to the title game for a fifth consecutive year with a 6-1 win over ASC West Division champion Texas Lutheran University in the second round.
Texas Lutheran (29-10-1) will face the University of Texas at Dallas (24-14) in Saturday's semifinal game scheduled for an 11:00 start. TLU opened the ASC Championship Tournament with a 3-0 shutout of UTD on Friday. UT Dallas went on to eliminate Mary Hardin-Baylor with a 3-1 win in Friday's loser's bracket game.
The conference title game is scheduled at 1:00 Saturday with ETBU facing the winner of the TLU/UTD semifinal.
GAME 1: #1 East Texas Baptist 2, Mary
Left fielder Janae Schlabs opened the second with a double to right field, then scored two batters later on Lexi Langley's ground-out to first base for the Lady Tigers' first run. In the third, first baseman Holley Martin scored from second base when Allison Ratcliff's right side shot was mishandled by UMHB right fielder Rachel Goodwin. UMHB managed to set down ETBU in order in the fourth and fifth and allowed one runner--on a walk--in the sixth.
Kristen Abernathy (7-0) struck out seven and allowed three hits in the win. Jackilyn Michel (10-6) took the loss for the Crusaders.

GAME 2: Texas Lutheran 3, UT Dallas 0
The three runs were enough for Bulldog starter Amanda Stevens (17-5) who tossed her 11th shutout of the year and tied the TLU season pitching wins record.
UT Dallas (23-14) scattered eight hits, including a 3-for-4 performance by first baseman Candace Felts and a pair of singles from third baseman Amanda Craig.
Five different TLU batters recorded singles off UTD's Stephanie Herrera (6-5), who struck-out eight, but walked five.

GAME 3: UT Dallas 3, Mary Hardin-Baylor 1
The loss eliminated UMHB from the tournament while UTD advances to play Texas Lutheran in Saturday's semifinal game.
Lawrence gave UTD a 1-0 lead in the first, scoring on an Amanda Craig left field single, then put the Comets ahead for good in the fifth when she stole third and ran home on a throwing error. Lawrence's RBI single in the sixth provided the insurance run.
UTD freshman Daci DeLeon (5-5) earned the win in relief of starter Christina Sass, striking out nine Crusaders over 3.2 innings. Megan Brown (15-6), who singled-in the lone UMHB run in the fourth, took the loss.

GAME 4: #1 East Texas Baptist 6, Texas Lutheran
The blast pushed ETBU's team home run count to 47, one shy of tying the NCAA Division III season home run record. ETBU (39-3) added three more runs in the fifth to go ahead 6-0, but TLU scored in the sixth to end the shutout bid.
Ratcliff, Angela Gonzales, Holley Martin and Lexi Langley smacked two hits apiece as the Lady Tigers (39-3) battered Texas Lutheran pitching for 11 hits--five for extra bases.
Ashley Stout (8-0) collected the win for ETBU while Lauren Dobson (12-5) took the loss.
