A Handful of ASC Softball Championships for East Texas Baptist

IRVING, Texas --- No. 1-ranked East Texas Baptist University collected its fifth straight American Southwest Conference softball championship on Saturday (May 1) with a decisive 7-1 victory over the University of Texas at Dallas in the conference tournament championship game.

The Lady Tigers (40-3) not only took home the ASC trophy for a fifth time, but earned a third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship as the conference's automatic qualifier. ETBU was NCAA regional runner-up in 2002 and finished fourth in the 2003 regional. NCAA tournament brackets will be announced Monday (May 3).

East Texas Baptist swept through the ASC Softball Championship field, upending Mary Hardin-Baylor 2-0 in the opening round and advancing to the title game with a 6-1 win over Texas Lutheran in round two.

In the championship game, East Texas Baptist exploded for three runs in the second and two in the third to jump out 5-1, then plated single runs in the fourth and sixth for the 7-1 final score. ETBU scattered 11 hits off UT Dallas pitching, with Angela Gonzales smacking a double to the center field fence in the sixth for the only extra-base hit. Second baseman Jennifer Doyal rapped RBI singles in the second and third innings (2-for-2) while Gonzales and Allison Ratcliff were both 2-for-4 at the plate.

UT Dallas (25-15) mounted its biggest challenge in the third inning, loading the bases on a single, infield error and a walk with one out. Stephanie Herrera singled to left to score leadoff Shaunna Lawrence before ETBU threw out a runner at home and forced an infield fly out to stop the UTD threat.

Both coaches went three pitchers deep in the game, with each side recording just one strikeout. East Texas Baptist reliever Meredith Flies came on in the third and worked 4.0 innings for the win (3-0). UTD starter Daci DeLeon took the loss (6-6) and the Comets staff allowed six walks.

Game 5/Semifinal: UT Dallas 9, Texas Lutheran 0 (5 inn.)

UT Dallas capitalized on seven hits and a pair of Texas Lutheran errors, exploding for six second-inning runs en route to a 9-0 run-rule win over ASC West champion TLU in Saturday's ASC Softball Championship semifinal game. UTD (25-14) added three runs in the third inning and retired the Bulldogs in order in the first, third and fourth innings. Shaunna Lawrence, Amanda Craig and Tiffany Maynard were each 2-for-3 for the game while Craig and Adrina Arenas each collected doubles. Comets hurler Daci DeLeon (6-5) struck out seven and allowed two hits and no walks in the complete-game win. Amanda Stevens (17-6) took the loss for TLU who was eliminated from the tournament.
