ASC Champion McMurry Heads North to NCAA Baseball Regional

American Southwest Conference champion McMurry University begins its run for the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship title with a trip to regional play in Bloomington, Ill., this weekend.

McMurry (29-13) is the fourth-seed in the six-team regional scheduled at Illinois Wesleyan University Thursday through Sunday (May 20-23). Host IWU (28-17) is the No. 1 seed with Carthage College (34-9) and Simpson College (29-14) second and third seed, respectively. Fifth seed Blackburn College (23-17) and sixth seed Aurora University (22-17) complete the regional field. A total of 42 teams qualified for the 2004 Division III national championship tournament.

McMurry faces Simpson College in first round action on Thursday at 3:00 (CDT). Other IWU Regional opening match-ups pit Illinois Wesleyan vs. Aurora and Carthage against Blackburn.

Co-champions of the ASC West Division, McMurry beat ASC East champion UT Dallas, 6-2, in the title game to claim its first conference championship since 2001 and third in six years. The Indians have been idle since the May 2 ASC Championship game.

The winner of the IWU regional advances to play the winner of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute regional at the eight-team NCAA Division III Championship scheduled May 28-June 1 in Appleton, Wis.
