ASC Baseball Preseason Division Players and Pitchers of the Year Announced

RICHARDSON, Texas --- Five individuals have been selected for 2005 American Southwest Conference baseball preseason division honors in balloting conducted among the league's head coaches, sports information directors and media.

Trey Luster Craig Howze

ETBU's Trey Luster (left) and MC's Craig Howze were named the East Division's Preseason Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

In the ASC East Division East Texas Baptist outfielder Trey Luster was named Preseason Player of the Year while Mississippi College hurler Craig Howze was chosen Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

McMurry outfielder Greg Erickson was tabbed as ASC West Division Preseason Player of the Year with Texas Lutheran pitching duo Kyle Newman and Brian Wallace selected co-Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

A senior, Luster (Baytown, Texas/Sterling HS) won 2004 ASC East Player of the Year honors after hitting .500 (37-of-74) with 11 home runs and 29 RBI in ASC East play to win the division batting title. Luster capped last season with ABCA All-West Region and ASC East First Team awards.

Howze (Latimer, Miss.) enters his senior season off an All-ASC East First Team season where he held division opponents to a combined .196 batting average while striking out 44. Howze posted a 2.66 ERA and 5-1 division record in seven appearances (44.0 innings).

An All-ASC West First Team selection a year ago, Erickson (Crowley, Texas/CHS) batted .426 (29-of-68) vs. the division, scoring 22 runs with 31 RBI and 10 home runs. The junior was also named to the ABCA All-West Region Second Team.

Newman (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) was named the ASC West Division Freshman of the Year and All-ASC West Honorable Mention a year ago. The left-hander posted a 3-0 record with a 2.88 ERA against the ASC West, allowing a division-low 18 hits in holding opposing hitters to a combined .205 batting average (25.0 innings).

Wallace (Seguin, Texas/Seguin HS) led the ASC West Division pitchers with 0.74 ERA, tossing 36 strikeouts and holding opposing hitters to a .162 batting average. The junior left-hander was 4-0 in six ASC West appearances (36.1 innings), and was named to the ASC West Second Team last season.
