ASC Baseball Preseason Poll Announced
Mississippi College Tops in ASC East Division, McMurry Favored in ASC West Division Races

RICHARDSON, Texas---Defending American Southwest Conference champion McMurry University and Mississippi College are the teams favored to win 2005 baseball conference division titles following polling by the conference head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives. McMurry is the favorite in the ASC West Division while Mississippi College is the top pick in the ASC East Division. The preseason ASC baseball poll was released on Monday (Jan. 24).

Winners of last season’s ASC title and the West Division co-champion, McMurry posted a 29-15 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Division III Regional Championship Tournament. The Indians received 10 of 18 first-place votes and totaled 132 points, two more than Texas Lutheran who collected six first-place votes and 130 points.

Hardin-Simmons, who earned one first-place vote, was picked third (104 pts.) in the ASC West, followed by defending division co-champion Concordia-Austin in fourth (94 pts.). Mary Hardin-Baylor at fifth (59 pts.), Howard Payne at sixth (56 pts.), Schreiner at seventh (39 pts., one first-place vote) and Sul Ross State University at eighth (34 pts.) complete the ASC West Division picks.

Mississippi College, 2004 runner-up in the ASC East (31-12 overall) collected 10 of 19 first-place votes for 141 points for the top pick in the ASC East Division. Defending ASC East champion and tournament runner-up Texas-Dallas nabbed seven firstplace votes and totaled 137 points for second while Texas-Tyler came in third with 117 points and two first-place votes. East Texas Baptist was voted fourth (87 pts.) to complete the upper half of the ASC East.

Louisiana College in fifth (74 pts.), LeTourneau in sixth (52 pts.), Austin College in seventh (42 pts.) and University of the Ozarks in eighth (34 pts.) complete the ASC East Division preseason rankings.

ASC Diamond Notables

  • Texas Lutheran will open the 2005 season as the lone ASC team in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll. The Bulldogs list No. 30.
  • The 2005 ASC Baseball Championship Tournament field doubles in size, going from four to eight teams. The top four seeded teams in each division will earn conference playoff berths. The ASC Baseball Championship Tournament begins first round play April 29-30 with a best-of-three series (1 East/4 West, 1 West/4 East, 2 West/3 East, 2 East/3 West), and continues into championship double-elimination play May 6-7-8.
