BLOOMINGTON, Ill. --- McMurry University senior Cody Brotherton (Stratford, Texas/SHS) claimed his second shot put title in the last three years Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University.
Ranked No. 1 in the nation in his event heading into this weekend's national meet, Brotherton's performance of 59-2 3/4 in both his first and third attempts broke both the McMurry and IWU Shirk Center records as well as established an indoor season high in NCAA Division III. Brotherton bettered his own school mark of 57-9 1/2, set at the season-opening Texas Tech/Wes Kittley All Comers on Jan. 21.
Brandon Houle of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, a sophomore, came in second place at 58-61/2.
Brotherton capped his indoor shot put career with impressive credentials: NCAA titles in 2003 and 2005, three-time all-American and 5-0 this season including victories over NCAA I and NAIA-scholarship foes. He was third at last year's NCAA-III Indoor Championships.
With the outdoor track and field season already under way, Brotherton will now shift his focus as the two-time defending NCAA shot put champion.
