ASC Softball Championship Tournament: Texas Lutheran, East Texas Baptist Claim First-Round Wins

IRVING, Texas ----- Texas Lutheran and East Texas Baptist each capitalized on extra-base hits to claim first-round wins and move into the winners bracket of the 2005 American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament.

Texas Lutheran (23-18) scored three runs in the sixth to upend UT-Dallas 4-1. TLU will face ASC West Division champion and #19-ranked Hardin-Simmons Friday morning (11:00).

East Texas Baptist (25-13) broke open a 2-1 game with two runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to post a 6-1 win against Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Lady Tigers (25-13) advance to play ASC East Division champion Louisiana College Friday at 11:00.

UT-Dallas (23-16) will play the loser of the Texas Lutheran-Hardin-Simmons game while Mary Hardin-Baylor (24-16) resumes tournament play vs. the ETBU-Louisiana College loser. Both games are at 1:00 with UTD and UMHB looking to avoid elimination.

Game 1: East Texas Baptist 6, Mary Hardin-Baylor 1 Box Score
East Texas Baptist opened defense of its ASC softball championship with a decisive 6-1 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first round. The Lady Tigers made the most of five UMHB errors in the first three innings, scoring lone runs in the first and third. UMHB trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the third on a Kacie Kripner RBI triple to center field. East Texas Baptist opened a 4-1 lead when Holley Martin sent a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Christy Shipley and Jaimie Molling tripled-in pinch-runner Tressie McCoy two batters later. ETBU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when Allison Ratcliff, who was 2-for-4 in the opener, doubled down the left field line. Meredith Flies went the distance for ETBU, allowing six hits while striking-out six. Jackilyn Michel took the loss for UMHB.

Game 2: Texas Lutheran 4, UT-Dallas 1 Box Score
Texas Lutheran scored three runs on three hits, including a one-out two-run double by Amy Behlen, in the sixth inning for a 4-1 win against UT-Dallas in the first round. Tiffany Haines began the runs parade with a double to left center followed by Jayme Reiss' single -- both scoring on Behlen's blast to the gap in left center. Amanda Stavena singled-in Behlen for the third run in the sixth. TLU put the game's first run on the board in the second when a throwing error by UTD first baseman Amanda Craig on an Amanda Stevens sacrifice allowed Jayme Reiss to score. UT-Dallas tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning when leadoff batter Stephanie Herrera tripled to right and came home on a throwing error. Amanda Stevens tossed a complete game win allowing five hits with two strikeouts. Herrera took the loss for UTD.
