Three Left in ASC Softball Championship Tournament

IRVING, Texas ----- Three teams survived Friday's six-game marathon to move on to Saturday's semifinal and championship games at the 2005 ASC Softball Championship Tournament. East Division champ Louisiana College will play division rival UT-Dallas in the 11:00 semifinal. West Division champion and #19-ranked Hardin-Simmons awaits the LC/UTD winner in the 1:00 championship game.

Hardin-Simmons (32-7) won both of its Friday games, downing Texas Lutheran 3-0 then scoring twice in the top of the seventh for a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over Louisiana College. LC (29-9) opened the day with a 6-3 win over East Texas Baptist before dropping into the losers' bracket with the HSU loss. UT-Dallas (25-16) ousted five-time defending ASC champion East Texas Baptist 4-3, then eliminated Texas Lutheran 3-0 to play for its second straight trip to the conference title game.

Game 3: Louisiana College 6, East Texas Baptist 3 Box Score
East Division champion Louisiana College opened its ASC Championship run with a 6-3 win over defending champion East Texas Baptist, sending the Lady Tigers (25-14) into the losers bracket. LC scored four runs on four hits and a pair of costly ETBU errors in the second inning to stake a 4-0 lead. Leanne Shanks sent a one-out single up the middle to score the first run with the next three scores coming with two outs on back-to-back errors. ETBU scored on a Christy Shipley solo home run in the third, and cut the LC lead to one, 3-2, when Allison Ratcliff smacked a two-run home run in the fourth. Erica Harwell's RBI single followed by Emillie Collins' RBI double pushed the Lady Wildcats' insurance runs across in the fifth. Sandi Clark struck out six and allowed three runs, two earned, to post the win for LC. East Texas Baptist starter Ashley Stout took the loss.

Game 4: Hardin-Simmons 3, Texas Lutheran 0 Box Score
#19-ranked Hardin-Simmons scored twice in the first inning on back-to-back singles by Sadye Hill and Lydia Bradley, then held Texas Lutheran (23-19) to just three hits -- all singles -- to open its first ASC Softball Championship Tournament appearance with a 3-0 win. Jennifer Cooper drove in the insurance run on a single to left field in the sixth. Hill, Bradley and Cooper each went 2-for-3 as the Cowgirls (31-7) scattered 10 hits off TLU ace Amanda Stevens. Arin Spence struck out six and allowed six walks in earning the complete game shutout.

Game 5: Texas Lutheran 1, Mary Hardin-Baylor 0 Box Score
Texas Lutheran bounced back from its morning loss with a 1-0 win over division rival Mary Hardin-Baylor in an elimination game. The Bulldogs (24-19) broke the scoreless tie in the fourth when Larissa Cover sent a two-out double into left center field, moved to third on a wild pitch and stole home on a double steal play. UMHB (24-17) had its best chance to tie the game in the fifth, but stranded three runners when No. 4 hitter Amanda Weckwerth hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning. Lauren Dobson collected the complete game shutout with seven strikeouts and five hits. Daphne Kahlig took the loss for UMHB, allowing eight hits and four walks.

Game 6: UT-Dallas 4, East Texas Baptist 3 Box Score
Keely Jones provided the most dramatic moment in the tournament when she sent a bottom of the seventh, two-out, 3-2, pitch to center field scoring the game-winning runs to give UT-Dallas a 4-3 comeback victory over defending conference champion East Texas Baptist in an elimination game. UTD (24-16) took a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI from Sarah Ardlt and Jones' sacrifice fly. ETBU (25-15) roared back in the third, tying the game a two-run error on UTD left fielder Kate Lightfield and going ahead 3-2 on an RBI double by Allison Ratcliff. Lyndsey Hughes posted the win in relief of Comet starter Daci DeLeon, with the duo retiring seven ETBU batters by strikeout. Kelli Shipley gave up nine hits and two earned runs in the loss.

Game 7: Hardin-Simmons 4, Louisiana College 3 Box Score
Hardin-Simmons won the battle of the ASC Division champions, scoring twice in the seventh for a comeback 4-3 win over Louisiana College. The loss sends LC (29-9) into the losers bracket and the Cowgirls (32-7) into the tournament's championship game. HSU led 2-0 after knocking-in runs in the second and fourth innings on RBI singles from Emily Schlebach and Nicole Cortez. The Louisiana College offense caught fire in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on RBI hits by Leanne Shanks (triple), Kim Leggett (single) and Kayla Hemperly (double). Both teams scattered a combined 19 hits with LC second baseman Trista Helverson 3-for-4 and five other players collecting two hits apiece. Arin Spence kept her tournament record clean with a six-strikeout complete game victory. Sandi Clark took the loss after entering in the sixth for the starter Collins.

Game 8: UT-Dallas 3, Texas Lutheran 0 Box Score
UT-Dallas handed Texas Lutheran its second 3-0 shutout of the day, moving into the semifinals for a second straight season and ousting the Bulldogs from the tournament. Shortstop Amber Griffin's two-run triple down the right field line scored Lyndsi Ayers and Andrina Arenas to put the Comets (25-16) on the scoreboard in the second inning. Pinch runner Kelly Roberts scored an insurance run for UTD when Kate Lightfield reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth. Texas Lutheran (24-20) twice stranded runners at second base and managed just four hits off UTD's Daci DeLeon. Amanda Stevens took the loss, giving up eight hits.
