ASC Baseball Top Seeds Advance to Winners Bracket

MARSHALL, Texas ---- Top seeds East Texas Baptist and Texas Lutheran posted wins in Friday's ASC Baseball Championship Tournament Series to advance into the winner's bracket game at noon on Saturday.

No. 23-ranked ETBU (34-9) used a ninth-inning walk-off home run by Nick Martinek to get past Hardin-Simmons 9-7 in Friday's championship round opening game. No. 29-ranked Texas Lutheran (31-8) scored nine runs over the first three innings to coast to a 12-5 seven-inning run-rule win over Concordia-Austin in game two on Friday.

Hardin-Simmons (26-18) and Concordia-Austin (22-13) square-off in Saturday's 9:00 a.m. elimination game while ETBU and TLU are scheduled for a noon start in the winner's bracket game. The HSU/CUA winner will play the ETBU/TLU loser at 3:00 p.m. in the semifinal game.

The ASC Championship game is scheduled for a noon start on Sunday with the winner earning the ASC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.

East Texas Baptist 11, Hardin-Simmons 9 Box Score

East Texas Baptist shortstop Nick Martinek drove a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the ninth to give the Tigers an 11-9 win over Hardin-Simmons. Martinek's homer, his second hit of the day, scored Jared Poteet who reached on a left field double one batter earlier. ETBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings, but HSU put up seven runs -- five via RBI home runs by Barry Janisse and Brad Coleman -- in the top of the fifth to take a 7-3 lead. The Tigers answered by plating four runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score. HSU scored once in sixth and seventh and ETBU twice in the sixth to carry a 9-9 tie into the final two innings. The two teams combined for 25 hits and six home runs. Bryant Hicks recorded the win in relief of starter Brandon Bass while Craig Foreman took the loss.

Texas Lutheran 12, Concordia-Austin 2 (7 inn.) Box Score

Aaron Crais belted a grand slam home run and an RBI double to lead Texas Lutheran to a 12-2 seven-inning run-rule victory over Concordia-Austin in Friday's second ASC Tournament game. TLU collected 15 hits and gave starter Matt Hunn plenty of run support. Hunn (9-0)struck out 10, walked five and allowed seven hits and two runs. CUA had just trimmed the TLU lead to 4-2 when the Bulldogs put five on the board in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs tacked on three runs in the fourth, then used solid defense to strand CUA runners in each of the remaining three innings, including three in the seventh. Brett Cannon, John Krog and Chris Dusablon each totaled three hits for TLU while Jason Pyle and Greg Warren were 2-of-4 for the Tornados. Ethan Morrison took the loss on the mound.
