May 10, 2005
American Southwest Conference champion Louisiana College will open its first run in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship tournament in California. The third-seeded Lady Wildcats face second-seed and host University of the Redlands Friday at noon (May 13) in the five-team, double-elimination regional at Redlands, Calif.
Chapman University (31-7) is the top-seed in the regional, earning a first-round bye. CU will face the winner of the No. 4 Linfield (31-7) and No. 5 Trinity (Texas) game on Friday. Four games are slated for Friday, three on Saturday and the regional championship game on Sunday. The regional winner advances to the eight-team NCAA Softball Finals May 20-24 at Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, N.C.
Louisiana College (32-9) is completing its second year as a full NCAA Division III member, winning its first ASC softball title after claiming its second ASC East Division championship in the last three seasons. The Lady Wildcats last national collegiate tournament experience -- the 2003 National Christian College Athletic Association tournament -- ended with LC running away with the national title en route to compiling a 34-4 season record.
The Lady Wildcats games in the regional will be available on Pineville, La., area radio 95.5 FM and on the Internet linked off the Louisiana College athletics website.
Chapman qualified as an independent while the other four regional teams each won their respective conference championships: Louisiana College in the ASC; Redlands (30-6) in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC); Linfield in the Northwest Conference; and Trinity (26-20) in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC).
