REDLANDS, Calif. ----- ASC softball champion Louisiana College saw its season end Sunday with a 4-3 extra-inning loss to #3-ranked Chapman in the NCAA Division III Regional championship game.
The win propels Chapman into the NCAA Division III Softball World Series in Raleigh, N.C., while Louisiana College ends its season at 34-11. The championship game appearance marked the first time since LC moved from NAIA to NCAA Division III that any Wildcat sport has advanced to an NCAA Regional final.
LC got things going early with a run in the first inning on a Trista Helverson RBI single to center field. The Lady Wildcats used a solo home run by first baseman Katherine Horton in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 2-0.
Chapman (34-7) didn't get on the board until the top of the fourth when it tied the game 2-2. The game remained knotted until the top of the eighth inning when CU's Meredith Cipollo drilled a 3-1 Sandi Clark pitch over the left field fence to put Chapman ahead 4-2. Clark, who was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in eight innings, pulled Louisiana College within a run with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth. Chapman pitcher Jennifer Winford shut the door on LC as she struck out Lacee Chruma to end the game. Winford picked up the win after pitching five innings of relief and allowing only one LC run on two hits.
Outfielder Misty Roark, pitcher Clark and at-large picks Kayla Hemperley and Katherine Horton were each named to the All-Regional team.
Louisiana College advanced to the regional final game with a 3-0 shutout of Trinity University in Saturday's semifinal. Earlier in the day, LC dropped to the loser's bracket with a 7-0 loss to Chapman. The Lady Wildcats opened their first NCAA Regional trip with a 6-2 win over #9-ranked University of the Redlands on Friday.
