Individuals Head to NCAA Div. III Track & Field Championships
May 24, 2005
Individuals and relay teams from three men's and three women's ASC teams will compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, Thursday through Saturday (May 26-28).
The two ASC championship teams -- McMurry men and Texas Lutheran women -- will each have six individuals at the national championships, with conference competitors totaling 12 men and 12 women. Howard Payne, McMurry, Mississippi College and Sul Ross State are also represented at the meet.
Howard Payne freshman sprinter Greg Nixon and McMurry senior thrower Cody Brotherton each enter the 2005 championships as the nation's top performer in their respective events.
Nixon posted a 10.37 time in the 100-meter dash at the May 12 Abilene Christian Open and a 20.86 clocking in the 200-m dash at the April 23 ASC Championships to enter as the No. 1 seed in both of those events. Nixon will also compete with the Howard Payne 4x100m relay team which qualified eighth with a 41.38 seconds clocking May 12 at the ACU Open. Nixon joins Richard Franklin, Clefton Marshalleck and Michael Perez on the HPU relay squad.
Brotherton recorded his nation's best shot put throw of 61-feet, 9-inches (18.82-meters) at the April 16 David Noble/Angelo State Relays. The throw is 3-feet, 2-inches better than the No. 2 throw in Division III. Brotherton is the defending shot put national champion winning with a 59-1 1/2 (18.02m) throw a year ago.
