Foursome Claim Preseason Softball Player Honors

RICHARDSON, Texas --- Four returning all-conference players have been selected for 2006 preseason American Southwest Conference honors in balloting conducted among the league's head coaches, sports information directors and select media.
East Texas Baptist University shortstop Christy Shipley (Longview, Texas/Pine Tree HS) and Louisiana College right-hander Sandi Clark (Hineston, La./Oak Hill HS) were each picked for a second straight season for preseason honors in the ASC East Division. ASC West Division preseason honors went to Hardin-Simmons duo infielder Sadye Hill (Burleson, Texas) and pitcher Arin Spence (Abilene, Texas) who helped HSU to its first West Division championship last season.
Shipley, voted ASC East Preseason Player of the Year, finished the 2005 season batting .376 vs. the conference with 21 RBI. The junior was named ASC East Player of the Year, NFCA All-West Region Second Team, ASC All-Conference and All-East Division a year ago.
Named ASC East Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Clark led Louisiana College to the 2005 conference division and tournament championships and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Div. III West Region Championship. She posted the lowest ERA in league games (0.51) and fashioned an 11-2 record over 15 ASC game appearances. The senior was named 2005 ASC East Pitcher of the Year, All-Conference and All-East Division.
Named to the NFCA All-America Third Team and All-West Region First Team, Hill was the 2005 co-ASC West Freshman of the Year after batting a blazing .512 vs. conference teams with 42 RBI. Picked as the ASC West Preseason Player of the Year, the sophomore also collected All-Conference and All-West awards from the ASC a year ago.
The ASC West Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Spence compiled a 14-2 ASC record in the circle a year ago and claimed ASC West Player, Pitcher and Newcomer of the Year individual awards in addition to All-Conference and All-West citations. The junior was also an NFCA All-West Region Second Team selection. A threat at the plate, Spence scored 30 runs, drove in another 32 scores and hit .333 vs. conference opponents.
