2006 Softball Championship Tournament: Top Seeds Avoid Upset with Comeback Wins

Day One Recap

IRVING, Texas --- No. 1 seeds Louisiana College and Hardin-Simmons avoided upset in their tournament openers on Friday, each posting comeback wins to advance in the ASC Softball Championship Tournament. Erica Harwell drilled a walk-off home run to left field to give Louisiana College a 2-1 win over Mississippi College in 8 innings while Hardin-Simmons scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to slip past East Texas Baptist 8-7.

Rain washed away the rest of scheduled Friday play and forced a revision in the tournament schedule. Saturday play is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. with elimination games: Mary Hardin-Baylor vs. East Texas Baptist and Mississippi College vs. Howard Payne. The Louisiana College vs. Hardin-Simmons and winners from the 11:00 elimination games are scheduled at 2:00. The semifinal game pits the LC/HSU loser against the remaining loser's bracket team at 5:00. The ASC championship game is set for Sunday at 1:00.

Game 3: #5 Louisiana College 2, Mississippi College 1 (8 inn.) Box Score
East Division champion Louisiana College escaped upset in its first round ASC Softball Championship game thanks to a two-out walk-off home run by Erica Harwell in the bottom of the eighth inning to get past Mississippi College 2-1. LC had tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single to shallow right field by Ashlyn Harmon that scored pinch runner Allison Rieve from third. Harwell and Harmon each collected a pair of hits with Harwell stroking a triple in the first inning. Mississippi College put the game's first run on the scoreboard on an RBI single to right center by Alisha Farrish. The Lady Choctaws scattered four singles off Sandi Clark, but had 10 batters retired by strikeout. Katie Perry allowed seven hits in the loss for MC.

Game 4: Hardin-Simmons 8, East Texas Baptist 7 Box Score
Hardin-Simmons scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to get past East Texas Baptist 8-7 in its first round ASC Softball Championship game. Leadoff Cricket Criner reached on an ETBU error then tied the score when Arin Spence doubled to left center. Sayde Hill drilled a single up the middle to score Spence for the game-winning run. East Texas Baptist scored five times in the fifth inning to go ahead 7-3, but HSU answered with a pair of scores in the bottom of the fifth and added a run in the sixth to set-up the final inning drama. Nicole Cortez paced the 9-hit HSU offense with a pair of doubles and a single. Spence posted the win for HSU allowing eight hits while Kelli Shipley took the loss for ETBU.
