All Six Volleyball Preseason Players of Year Come From Different Programs

RICHARDSON, Texas –– Hardin-Simmons University’s Virginia Aguilar, Texas Lutheran University’s Megan Purser, Schreiner University’s Whitney Barron, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Amanda Crawford, University of Texas at Dallas’ Brittany Fowler and East Texas Baptist University’s Jill Boyd all received American Southwest Conference preseason player of the year honors after a vote of division head coaches and sports information directors, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

Out of the West Division, 5-10 Aguilar (Kalaheo, Hawaii/Waimea) was selected as Preseason Hitter of the Year, Purser (Dickinson, Texas/DHS) was tabbed Preseason Settter of the Year and Barron (Richmond, Texas/Foster HS) was named Defensive Specialist of the Year.

Aguilar, a senior middle blocker and reigning ASC West Division Player of the Year, leads the favored Cowgirls after a 367-kill season in which she compiled a .320 hitting percentage for the West champions.

Purser, a 2005 ASC All-West Division Honorable Mention pick as a sophomore, averaged 11.18 assists per game for the second-place Bulldogs.

Barron, a senior, is coming off an honorable mention season for the Mountaineers that included 5.12 digs per game.

Crawford (Palestine, Texas/PHS) was selected as preseason top hitter in the East Division and was joined by top setter Fowler (New Braunfels, Texas/NBHS) and best defensive specialist Boyd (Haslet, Texas/Northwest HS).

Crawford, a senior outside hitter, pounded 361 kills last season and had a team-high of 95 service aces for the Crusaders in the West. Her marks landed her on the division’s first team.

Fowler, a junior who doubles as an outside hitter, dished out 3.67 assists per game for the Comets.

Junior libero Boyd of the favored Lady Tigers is coming off a sharp 2005 season composed of 4.87 digs per game.

Fowler and Boyd – both first-team selections from the East last season – shared the East’s top newcomer award in 2004.

American Southwest Conference volleyball action begins September 1 with the conference championship tournament on tap for November 3-4 at the site of the West Division champion.
