Division Impresses on First Day of First Pitch Softball Tournament

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas The East Division ruled the West on the opening day of the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament at Oran Good Park.
No. 11-ranked Louisiana College, East Texas Baptist, Mississippi College and Texas-Tyler all went 2-0 on Friday to help the East Division to a 9-5 advantage heading into Saturdays final slate. Howard Payne was the lone West Division team to begin with a 2-0 mark.
Nine of the 14 games on Friday were decided by three runs or less. Mississippi College had two of them, defeating Texas Lutheran 1-0 and then topping Hardin-Simmons 3-0 both times using late home runs. The Lady Choctaws were the only squad in the 14-team field not to surrender a run. Texas-Tyler used a two-run bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Schreiner 2-1 and stay perfect on the season (9-0).
LeTourneau (East), Mary Hardin-Baylor, Hardin-Simmons and Texas Lutheran (West) split their two first-day games.
