Lutheran Sweeps ASC Golf Championships April 23, 2007 |

McKINNEY, Texas The Texas Lutheran men and women each held on to their first-day leads and went on to produce a sweep at the American Southwest Conference Golf Championships on a misty Tuesday at par-72 Stonebridge Ranch Country Club The Hills Course. The TLU men won the crown for the second straight year, while the TLU women captured their first-ever ASC golf title snapping Mary Hardin-Baylors streak of seven straight championships. Each received the conferences first automatic bids to the NCAA national tournament. The TLU men (293-288-307888, +24), led by individual champion and only golfer under par, freshman Ryan Kiel (69-70-76215, -1), held off second-place McMurry (303-302-288) by five strokes. The Bulldogs became the first mens team to win back-to-back ASC titles since Hardin-Simmons in 2000. Mary Hardin-Baylor (902) was third, followed by HSU (906), LeTourneau (918), Mississippi College (919), Texas-Dallas (921) and Louisiana College (958). TLU also utilized the play of W. Tanner Carter (+2), who tied for third place individually with McMurrys Larry Courtney. LeTourneaus Patrick Palmer (+1) was the runner-up. HSUs Travis Brown was fifth at 3-over. Kiel, Plamer, Courtney, Carter and Brown all made the ASC All-Conference First Team. Neil Simpson, Jonathan Swisher and A.J. Vesey rounded out TLUs title squad. The TLU women (331-338669) had four golfers among the top 10 finishers Carly Hanson (80-82162, tied for second place), Angela Aufderhaar (165, fifth), Brynn Waggoner (171, tied for eighth) and Sarah Thompson (171). Andrea Ramirez rounded out the Lady Bulldogs championship team. TLU held off UMHB (334-342) by seven strokes. McMurry (701) was third, followed by Hardin-Simmons (702), LeTourneau (745) and Texas-Dallas (860). UMHB sophomore Jenna Felechner (76-79155, +11) was the only golfer to post two sub-80 rounds en route to winning the individual title. She became UMHBs fifth different individual champion extending an ASC record among both the men and the women. McMurrys Barbara John (+18) tied for second, but defeated Hanson in a playoff for the outright spot. Schreiners Surraya Minhas, the only individual in the field, was fourth. Felechner, John, Hanson, Minhas and Aufderhaar made the ASC All-Conference First Team. TLU head coach H.C. Tran won both ASC Golf Coach of the Year awards.
