Texas Lutheran Sweeps ASC Golf Championships
April 23, 2007

McKINNEY, Texas – The Texas Lutheran men and women each held on to their first-day leads and went on to produce a sweep at the American Southwest Conference Golf Championships on a misty Tuesday at par-72 Stonebridge Ranch Country Club – The Hills Course.

The TLU men won the crown for the second straight year, while the TLU women captured their first-ever ASC golf title – snapping Mary Hardin-Baylor’s streak of seven straight championships. Each received the conference’s first automatic bids to the NCAA national tournament.

The TLU men (293-288-307—888, +24), led by individual champion and only golfer under par, freshman Ryan Kiel (69-70-76—215, -1), held off second-place McMurry (303-302-288) by five strokes. The Bulldogs became the first men’s team to win back-to-back ASC titles since Hardin-Simmons in 2000. Mary Hardin-Baylor (902) was third, followed by HSU (906), LeTourneau (918), Mississippi College (919), Texas-Dallas (921) and Louisiana College (958).

TLU also utilized the play of W. Tanner Carter (+2), who tied for third place individually with McMurry’s Larry Courtney. LeTourneau’s Patrick Palmer (+1) was the runner-up. HSU’s Travis Brown was fifth at 3-over. Kiel, Plamer, Courtney, Carter and Brown all made the ASC All-Conference First Team. Neil Simpson, Jonathan Swisher and A.J. Vesey rounded out TLU’s title squad.

The TLU women (331-338—669) had four golfers among the top 10 finishers – Carly Hanson (80-82—162, tied for second place), Angela Aufderhaar (165, fifth), Brynn Waggoner (171, tied for eighth) and Sarah Thompson (171). Andrea Ramirez rounded out the Lady Bulldogs’ championship team. TLU held off UMHB (334-342) by seven strokes. McMurry (701) was third, followed by Hardin-Simmons (702), LeTourneau (745) and Texas-Dallas (860).

UMHB sophomore Jenna Felechner (76-79—155, +11) was the only golfer to post two sub-80 rounds en route to winning the individual title. She became UMHB’s fifth different individual champion – extending an ASC record among both the men and the women. McMurry’s Barbara John (+18) tied for second, but defeated Hanson in a playoff for the outright spot. Schreiner’s Surraya Minhas, the only individual in the field, was fourth. Felechner, John, Hanson, Minhas and Aufderhaar made the ASC All-Conference First Team.

TLU head coach H.C. Tran won both ASC Golf Coach of the Year awards. It was his first time being honored on the women's side and second on the men.
